Speed Test |
The speed of your internet connection is influenced by many things. Among them are:
| The quality of the physical connection you have whether it is dial-up or a broadband connection such as wireless, DSL, cable or satellite. | |
| The congestion of the Internet itself - how busy it is. | |
| The state of your computer and, for dial-up connections, the compatibility of your modem and the modem you are connected to at your ISP. |
For dial-up connections, the little icon you see in the tray by your time display gives you an indication (when you point to it) of the maximum speed negotiated by your modem and your ISP's modem but it is not necessarily the speed you get. To find out what you are really getting, you can utilize a service that sends you a known block of data, measures the time it takes for you to get it and then calculates your actual connection speed at that time with that information. A subsequent test will probably give a somewhat different result. The links above will take you to sites that will do this for you.
