| High Speed Satellite Internet Access |
In addition to signing you up for Internet service with our local service provider, Adams Networks, we can provide you with a high-speed satellite access link for home and business:
Approximately 80% to 90% of the data transmitted between you and the Internet is data received by you.
The speed or bandwidth of your connection determines the time it takes for you to receive information. A 56K modem will not connect you at 56k for several reasons: static electricity; interference from radio signals, power lines and other sources; line amplifiers and switching equipment in the telephone system and, in some cases, faulty or marginal telephone lines can force 56K modems to fall back to lower connection speeds. These are all things that are beyond the control of you or your ISP. When you add to this the losses incurred when downloaded information has to travel through several routers and other network components to get to you (components that are handling traffic for thousands of computers), it is no wonder that you don’t receive data at 56 kilobits per second.
Note that "downloaded information" includes everything that comes to your computer. Not only files that you specifically ask to be downloaded to you but everything you see in your browser's window; web pages, test, pictures, everything!
There are faster ways to connect than dial-up connections: ISDN, DSL and Cable are a few. They all have pros and cons, but the biggest drawback in rural areas like ours is availability – those options are simply not available at any reasonable price. Some fast options like a T1 or partial T1 line may be available if you are able to pay hundreds of dollars a month.
Satellite based Internet solves this problem by allowing you to retrieve information from the Internet through a satellite link at speeds in the range of 400 Kilobits per second. You still use your dial-up ISP to send information to the Internet.
Computer: IBM compatible PC, Pentium or above
Windows 95, Windows 98 or Windows NT 4.0 with a USB interface.
Satellite Dish and USB Satellite Modem
Modem (33.6K – 56K) and a dial-up ISP Internet Account.
The cost of the satellite dish and modem is now only $150. You can install it yourself (instructions are included) or we can install it for you (installation costs vary between $100 and $300 or more, depending on site layout and circumstances). The monthly access charge is $39.99. The cost for your ISP and the telephone connection cost (if any) is in addition to this. There are no other costs.
